Taiwanese Digital Satellite STB Shipment Expected to Reach 5.6 Million in 2007
July 27, 2007

According to MIC (Market Intelligence Center), an ICT industry research institute based in Taipei, Taiwanese digital satellite STB (Set-Top Box) shipment volume is expected to reach 3.2 million units in the second half of 2007, with shipment value expected to hit US$170 million. In the full-year 2007, shipment volume is expected to amount to 5.6 million units, up 20% in comparison with 2006. In 2008, Taiwanese makers are expected to see continued growth as existing brand-name vendors continue to increase orders outsourced to Taiwanese makers and new branded vendors will also outsource production to Taiwan. Development of emerging markets such as the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America will also be beneficial to the Taiwanese industry.

According to MIC analyst Leon Kao, although the first half of the year is usually seen as the off-season for digital satellite STBs, Taiwanese makers' shipment experienced growth due to increasing orders from European and Korean vendors. As a result, Taiwanese digital satellite STB shipment volume in the first half of 2007 reached approximately 2.4 million units, up 20% year-on-year. Shipment value amounted to US$150 million. As Taiwanese makers have been successful in switching to more advanced products, both shipment value and ASP (Average Selling Price) grew significantly year-on-year.

Looking at the worldwide market, the share of FTA (Free-To-Air) satellite STB models is relatively high. Technology barriers for this product type are low, and Taiwanese and Chinese chip manufacturers have rolled out reference boards for these products. This market is dominated by Chinese makers, as they make use of these reference boards and also employ low-price strategies. Several Taiwanese makers have exited this market segment, and have switched to pay satellite STB with CA (Conditional Access) and advanced product types. After a period of two years, this strategic switch is starting to show results, as STBs with CA accounted for 80% of total Taiwanese shipment volume in the first half of 2007. Advanced models with DVR (Digital Video Recording) and dual tuner functions accounted for 9.5% of Taiwanese CA STB shipment volume.
